Artist as Collaborator
Baltic, Gateshead, September 26-27
Artist as collaborator or participant: is there a place for collaborative practice within the art world?
This is the last symposium before the plenary. It will involve mainly the core group and- importantly - no invited speakers. The event will be constructed as a collaboration through a series of panel discussions involving every participant and facilitated by a political negotiator who will be part of Jason Bowman's companion project.
A verbatim account of the symposium will be compiled by a stenographer and displayed on the walls. Any edits will be made using tippex and pen and an instant publication can then be taken away on leaving.
Collaboration/participation/engagement take place at different stages in a project - research, development, production and dissemination. This symposium will examine these points of contact asking:
- What is the artist's role as participant?
- Is there a need to reconsider artist-as-artist?
- To what extent is the artist hidden within socially engaged practice?
- What is the relationship between facilitation and collaboration?
- Where does the authorship and ownership of the work lie?
- Is there a place for collaborative practice outside the realms of social welfare and education?
- How is value understood?
- Is an end product always necessary?
